FOR WRITING: An ex gave me a black Waterman fountain pen with a gold nib when I graduated from college—seventeen years ago (she typed, aghast). Obviously, he has since left the premises, but it was an extraordinary gift, because he understood my nascent wish to be a writer. I still think it is one of loveliest things I own, and I favor the blue-black ink cartridges.
